Agricultural research is often on the analysis of the data, therefore, the data collection process is an important success factor study. Complete data sets can really help support what we intend to achieve in the end: to improve the livelihoods of farmers.

The Modeling Platform integrated mixed cropping systems Animal (IMPACT) was developed to promote the exchange of data using standard protocols, and enabling tools should be linked to facilitate assessments of the different farming systems. However, there was a need to further enhance the tool, to make it easier and more efficient to use, as it took a considerable time to complete an interview.

Improved modeling platform

With this in mind, our team of data and tools directed the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) the task of designing IMPACTlite tool for the characterization of households.

Led by scientists from ILRI and CCAFS, IMPACTlite was designed and implemented in the field. The survey was conducted across 15 of our reference sites in twelve countries in East Africa, West Africa and South Asia.

This tool helps to capture the diversity of agricultural activities and characterize the main agricultural production systems. It’s really useful for anyone with the ambition to better understand the production systems of farmers and their dynamics. Besides the IMPACTlite tool provides a unifying framework for data collection.

The data sets that can be downloaded include detailed information and data on household composition, production systems and agricultural activities. They also include information on land and the distribution of labor within households, the income of farmers in the farm and non-farm activities and consumption of food and household goods, to name a few

A genre-lens control over resources, land ownership and allocation of activities has also been added to the data sets.
Researchers can easily download the data and figures that have been prepared. It is also possible to replicate the survey on other sites, which can then be used to compare with existing data. Researchers could develop other surveys IMPACTlite building on existing tools and existing data.
All about teamwork

The IMPACTlite ILRI team collected secondary information for each of the research sites, with the help and support of local site coordinators. Partnerships and collaborations were really well organized the key to success of IMPACTlite.
